Standing Ratio

Kinesiology is simply described as the study of movement, regarding a form of therapy using muscle monitoring to detect and relieve body imbalances. As we all know, extended periods of either sitting or standing can lead to various health issues. Callaghan and the Canada Research Chair of Spine Biomechanics and Injury Prevention at the University of Waterloo have been able to conduct a detailed study regarding the best sitting to standing ratio. In his research and studies, Professor Jack P. Callaghan claims that between a 1:1 and 1:3 ratio is what we should strive for throughout our day.

These ratios simply mean that per any given hour throughout our day, we should be standing for about 30-45 minutes and sitting for about 15-30 minutes. Professor Jack P. Callaghan’s study found proof that prolonged sitting or prolonged standing can be detrimental to our health, causing a variety of issues. That’s where this wonderful study comes into play.

Amongst his findings, Professor Jack P. Callaghan discovered that a frequent rotation of sitting and standing had increased many positive health outcomes. Professor Jack P. Callaghan’s extensive study and discovery of this ideal sitting to standing ratio has proven to reduce common discomfort, better blood flow, and all around a better work performance. Along with this sitting-to-standing ratio research, Professor Jack P. Callaghan has also extensively studied the effects of various chair type usage and has related it to injury prevention outcomes. Studying the effects on the human lumbar spine tissue has proven to teach us the importance of having a good balance of sitting and standing throughout our day.
